Naval Weapons and Warfare in The West

Naval Warfare in the west is very straightforward. The objective is simple: Ram, board, capture or sink the enemy ship, and repeat this process until all of your foes are sunk or fled. The problem with this is the invention of the Carroballista, which is a ballista that fires explosive bolts. Ships will align themselves to give broadsides of the weaponry, wreaking havoc on ships that try to close in. Add to this the invention of the Cannon, specifically the Naval 10 pound cannon (Vastly different from the land version), and the destructive potential of even a Sloop increases dramatically.

Naval warfare is also one of the few places that see crew members fully outfitted with Hand Cannons. The reason behind this is the relative size and power of the black powder weapons. So while ships keep Soldiers aboard who sweep enemy decks with Arrows before boarding the enemy vessels, or losing volleys of Fire arrows to try and set the enemy ship afire. The sounds of Hand Cannons and even muskets, along with their plumes of powder smoke.

It is important to note that these ships do not really have real-world counterparts. Given the structure of the Civilized West, the frequent raids form White Hall who can traverse Rivers with ALL of their vessel classes, most ships of the Kingdoms in the West are capable of both River and Ocean Travel. Clearly not all rivers can support all sizes of ships, but most in the Civilized West are deep enough for a Sloop, and many are deep enough for a Ship of the Line, though only Aequor has a single River, the Fiore, which is deep enough, and wide enough to fit the largest class of ships.

It is also important to note that there are several classes of ships that are a regular sight and make up the vast majority of the ships on the oceans. The ship classes listed under Kingdoms are powerful Naval vessels that are incredibly expensive, and only the richest of the houses will be able to put to sail large numbers of these. (The Richest House in the West only has eight Gallants as an example) The ships listed in the non-Kingdom Specific are the most common ships. While the Kingdom ships are usually of the Royal Navies or apart of a richer household. The ships listed under White Hall are the ships used by the Njorvolk for all things, and they do not have any of the on-Kingdom specific ships.

Ship Weapons

Developed by the Partharians, it took only two years before every ship soon had these weapons. Easier and cheaper to produce, the Carroballista kept the same ballista that already existed on the ships at the time. The difference was creating an explosive shaft that when it collides with a target, explodes with violent force.

Ships of the West

Non Kingdom Specific Ships

The barge is probably the most commonly seen ship in the entire West. They move goods down all navigable rivers and then back up them by way of horse drawn tow. They travel through man made canals, and can be seen as far inland as al'Mordran in northeastern Aequor.

Rivers are often replete with barges, especially in areas that wish to move their grain and goods from their inland fiefs to the seas for trading.

Barges vary enormously in size. They are universal in their complete lack of suitability for navigation outside of rivers and estuaries, being intended solely for the purposes of bringing goods to port and back.

Barges are very rarely armed, with captains usually preferring marines or soldiers on board, or escort from actual naval ships.
