Myrana

Myrana lifted the lid and let it slide down between crates, releasing a puff of the sweet hay aroma within, mingled with the acrid metal of what sat inside.

"I see," said Captain Vito of her Thornesmen, lifting one of the hand-cannons free.

"I want you to expand your number from the Slegrias rangers," she said, putting a hand on his arm and looking seriously up at him. Like all the Armaz Thornesmen under her command in Gendiel, he had taken to wearing thick brown fur on the collar of his ranger's coat against the perpetual cold. "Any woodsmen or hunters you feel up to recruitment and training. When the Argent Legion comes, I don't want them moving through the woods unmarked."

"Yes, Zmeya," he said. "We have completed work on the first of the high scout platforms, will you come to inspect it yourself?"

"Yes, I'd like to. Will you wait a moment though because- ah, there you are, Ravio."

Ravio bowed, long fingers tented over his heart. "I have begun preparations while you were away, and I feel I've found a number of candidates suitable to the work."

"Good…" Myra's dark blue eyes clouded a little, but she nodded, settng the lid back in place wth a scrape of wood. She'd given her cousin the hard task of forming a unit she'd never thought she'd want. Not in Gendiel.

But her father was right; war was coming, and quickly. She herself was no military genius like Ramius, but there was one thing she knew.

"Thank you, Ravio," she said, shoulders drooping a little and her hands trembling on the crates. A war of subterfuge and sabotage in Gendiel, trapped miles and miles from the sea. Spies and assassins would come whether they prepared for them or not, and she knew of no-one better suited to the dreadful postition than her own svelte cousin.

The new captain of her secret police bowed, and feeling rather sick to her stomach, she left with Vito, leaving Sam to deal with the crates of hand canons.
