Mattias

"Corruption. Lies. Some might well say that these are the cornerstone of our way of life. And what I have to tell you probably does little to dispell that notion. I come before you to let you know that I am a murderer. That while a good deal of blood stains my hands, blood spilt protecting this city and its allies, the blood of the previous Chancellor is there also."

Mattias hadn't let a single Councillor know just how the previous position had truly become vacant, but he knew it was only a matter of time. Secrets were rarely ever secrets for long. Despite the raid upon the Chancellor's estate taking place at night, there were too many variables in play to ensure that such a secret could ever remain so.

"I stand by my actions that night, I had discovered that our previous Chancellor had secretly begun funnelling vast amounts of coin to Rikton and Kentaire… despite claiming that we were neutral to the Kingdoms of Aequor and Galenthia. My investigation found that various businesses were set up by Chancellor Frederick Tyres, these very businesses funded the war effort that ravaged the lands about ours."

Mattias paused only to take a sip of water, his gaze flitting from Councillor to Councillor, "Having promised neutrality, he instead believed that he could gain great power by siding with the demonically posssessed leaders of Rikton and Kentaire, two great nations that are presently working on ensuring peace throughout their lands."

"And so on the morning of the Twenty Fourth, a beautiful Avril morning, in the year Eighteen Sixty Eight, my men raided those very businesses and shut off the wealth that was flowing to Rikton and Kentaire. I myself took a small party of my own personal guard and raided his estate, it was here that he died by my hand having admitted every last detail, while sat in a puddle of his own stinking piss."

Mattias paused once more to take another sip of the water, a deep breath steadied him once more and that cold gaze of his swept the chamber, "Our word is our bond. If we say we are neutral, we are neutral. And so under my direction, the exact amount of coin funnelled to Kentaire and Rikton was also sent to Aequor and Galenthia to ensure an equal footing. To ensure balance. To ensure that this idiotic act of duplicity could at least be remedied."

The Chancellor exhaled and closed his eyes for a brief moment, listening to the murmurs of other Councillors about the chamber, "I most likely over-reached, of that I am sure. But I shall not see the good name of Four Corners trampled through the mud by such foolish actions. In the event that you are no longer content with my service as Chancellor, I sincerely hope you do the same. Just make it somewhat more swift than I managed, my days of carving joints swiftly and effectively expired a good while ago.", that said, Mattias simply holds up his gloved hand, which in itself manages a few shocked and muted murmurs of dulled mirth.

That said, Mattias paused long enough before gesturing to those before him, "Any questions from my esteemed Councillors?"
