Mattias

The scent of Four Corners was if anything a most delightful sting of the senses. The ocean mingled with the clamour of people and the faint fetid undertones of the canals depending on which way the breeze was blowing. It was a perfume that was all too welcome to Sir Mattias Thynne, banker, guildmaster and councillor and in some quarters, rumoured of course, information broker.

And back in Four Corners, whisked from the once prison like Rikton and its foul barrier to the oh so free Free City that welcomed all and stood aloof from the travails of the various Kingdoms and the Holy City, Mattias stood for but a moment to listen and watch the bustle of merchants and travellers before slipping into the dark fortress like building that was the Banking House of Thynne.

It was but a few hours later that the Four Corners Councillor and Knight of Galenthia slipped past the portcullis of his institution and with a small body of black clad guards headed off into the city towards the Senate itself. A procession of black, though sombre as the clothing and armour was, Mattias himself greeted those he knew and remained as ever affable to those he didn't. It was good to be free of Rikton and it showed.

The Senate chamber itself was slowly filling with councillors as they arrived, the great and the good, the wealthy and the corrupt all settling in for a good many speeches and earnest debate. A colourful collection of men and women, though as ever drab in his rich black clothing, Mattias did little to stand out. Though he did stand up and with that gloved hand, seek to bring attention to his claiming of the floor.

"My dear Councillors…" The words rich and warmly spoken as a gentle pause followed, allowing some conversations to settle and soften and the noise to cease, "…you will be pleased to note that I am very much alive." The smirk that followed those words met with some amused laughter and gentle acknowledging tilt of the banker's closely cropped head, "It was a trying time, a time that proved that the Holiest of Cities was quite unable to protect those who had entered through its gates during this apparently peaceful carnivale."

With a gentle flit of his gloved hand, Mattias stood for but a moment surveying those gathered about the senate chamber, his good hand idly cupping the gloved and his fingers toying with the rings that added some colour to the black leather that encased that one hand, "I shan't bore you with the details of what occurred, suffice to say it was the common people who showed great courage in the face of greater adversity as they always do."

"We stand at this time amidst a schism within the One True Faith, with a High Priest in Rikton and it would seem a High Priestess here in Four Corners, I shall say with no hesitation that the Order Militant of the Reliants have done much to aid a good many and I bow to the Chancellors wisdom in granting them the Fortress they now reside within. For the Free City and I use those two words for good reason, the Free City of Four Corners is a most neutral city. A city that welcomes all. A city that has every right to be proud of all it has achieved through its strength, its openess and its freedoms that many beyond our borders fail to appreciate, experience or understand."

For a moment the Councillor stilled his words, watching, listening and smiling that as ever knowing smile as he acknowledged a few shouts, "Our streets, our canals and our land are free of turmoil and free of conflict and I stand here now to remind every last Templar, Inquisitor, Reliant and follower that should our peace be broken, peace shall be restored most swiftly, harshly and if need be, bloodily. And for the record…"

Again Mattias paused, that knowing smile widening a little as he simply added, "…it shan't be /our/ blood that is spilt." Waiting for whatever cheers, shouts or noise arose to die down, Mattias stretched lightly and let both hands fall to his sides before being swept back to clasp behind his back, "I also take this opportunity to announce that one thousand gold crowns will be spent in rebuilding or restoring many a structure and dredging the canals in areas afflicted by the plague that took hold those months ago, work shall be undertaken to ensure that these areas are restored to some semblance of past glory and in aiding our great Public Baths."

A nod and a gentle bow towards the seat where the Chancellor would otherwise be seated signals the end of Mattias' words and soon enough they are followed by more words from more councillors on a range of differing subjects.
