The news of Jacke Hawkness’ death hit the young Duchess extremely hard. The campaign in defense of Wayston had seen much loss, but this /loss/ had a face and a voice. She had been going to wait until after the campaign against d’Armaz was over to pardon the Reaver, but things happen and this pardon would come early.

The castle was quiet, as it was late, and it was then that Evae decided to sit down at the very desk she used as a child, in the very same room she used as a child as well. It was not questioned or even suggested that she move into the Ducal chambers her mother and father once occupied; no…Evae chose to remain in the room she had always known.

As she wrote the letter, Kaelyn stood behind her brushing her hair before the young Duchess slept. The handmaiden’s eyes focused solely on the locks before her; her voice silent.

Your Excellency Logan Hawkness:

It is with a heavy hand and a heavier heart that I write to express my condolences and deepest sympathy for your recent loss.
I openly admit without reservation that upon hearing the news of his death that I cried. I cared not who witnessed such.

Sir Jacke Hawkness was a loyal soldier to Wayston and a confidant to me personally. I trusted him with actions in this terrible campaign that I would have not have trusted to anyone else.

It was his reputation that led me to releasing him from the Bellmoore Prison; but it was the man itself who served me faithfully and paid the ultimate sacrifice.

Let it be known, that on the 11th day of Octubre, 1866, that Sir Jacke Hawkness has been granted a full pardon for speculated crimes committed against House Rogers.

Let this letter serve as a document for anyone who denies or refuses to accept my word.

Sir Jacke Hawkness is pardoned, and with such pardon any clouds that hang over House Hawkness as a result of said speculated crimes, shall give way to sunlight.

May The One bless House Hawkness and may your continued loyalty to House Arkanin and Wayston itself be a shining example of what makes us strong.

The young Duchess looked over the words that she had written and exhaled slowly. A hand raised to run across the bank of her neck as she signed her name with a flourishing script.

Evae Arkanin
Duchess of Wayston

She set the quill down upon the desk and folded her hands upon her lap as Kaelynn continued to brush her hair quietly as she always did. “How many more will have to die before this all ends Kaelyn?”

The question seemed more rhetorical, but the handmaiden answered in a soft whispered tone. “ At least one, and even one is too many.”
