Wulfred

The day after the battle of Circester and Sir Wulfred stood amidst the entrenchment that he and the men he commanded charged in order to claim the enemies artillery, the muddy ground sucking at his boots and the boots of his men as they worked about him.

"Thirty seven long cannons, see to it they are cleaned, checked for damage and stowed away…" Wulfred marked off each item on a ragged piece of parchment that had certainly seen better days, "Good stores of powder and shot, that will certainly see us further through the campaign… probably stolen from Griffon Point to begin with."

"Aye Sir Wulfred, wouldn't surprise me." The veteran captain of the long cannon grunted as he pulled his cloak further about himself and the long cannon he kept snug against his shoulder.

The powder was sorted, stowed and protected and likewise the ammunition for each long cannon, men hurrying and tending to the items with great care. The pile of damaged long cannons grew and grew for a good many had been used as clubs once that first volley had been fired. The weapons now worthless except for the metal that could no doubt be melted down at some later point.

"One carrobalista and plenty of ammunition… one trebuchet in need of repair and the ten cannon are all spiked, we'll need to get them to our eventual base of operations and see if they can be put back into service by a good smith." Each item of artillery marked off piece by piece and the pieces where hoisted and pushed and dragged through the mud to the commissary for inventory. All dead weight for the time being, but given time and some degree of skill and luck they could add greatly to the power of the Tarris forces.

"That is so… shame you missed it Sir Wulfred, our first volley against an enemy on Tarris lands… would have been good to hear your voice shout that first order." The captain grinned, casting a glance towards Sir Wulfred before looking back to the men milling about the muddy trench.

"Break up those pieces that are beyond repair… and yes, I hear you acquitted yourselves well, plenty of praise from Lord Thomas, plenty more to come I should think… the broken pieces will do for kindling and you there, take this message to His Excellency." Sir Wulfred barked, handing across a crudely sealed note to a passing soldier.

"Aye sir." The soldier snapped as he inclined his hedge to the bedraggled hedge knight and the captain. If ever there was a hedge knight who looked as if he had literally encountered a hedge and been dragged bodily through it several times over, it was indeed Sir Wulfred.

And a few moments later the axes were swinging and hacking the wood of the too far gone pieces of artillery into splinters that a good time later were aiding in warming the damp bodies of the Tarris forces who took advantage of what fires had been lit and now with the addition of further wood and kindling, roared with fiery heat.

And one very soggy Wulfred and his loyal captain continued to oversee the recovering of artillery and the protection of the trenches for the duration of their stay, while that note winged its way towards Viscount Reine.

Your Excellency,

Artillery recovered. One caroballista in working order. One trebuchet in need of a few days repair and the recovered cannons need a good smith as they are not repairable in the field. No doubt once we hold a village or town that can be achieved. Ammunition for the artillery is stowed safely, I've had the powder and shot for the cannon sent to the Heart of War. Thirty seven long cannon recovered, will with your permission issue to the Knights of the Burnished Spur to supplement their hand cannon and those squires worthy of such weapons. Plenty of powder and shot also recovered.
