Tristan  Melisande

((This letter will be delivered to Melisande either personally or through a very trusted Lancer (such as Sir Ray).))

My Queen,

I have thought long on what we discussed. I will take your advice, but I also think that it might be time to move past what I am. My father died a hero. If I were to die today what would people think of me? What would my uncle think of me? Likely most would consider me a worthless lecher that has wasted your money, your wine and your goodwill. As our Kingdom faces it's greatest challenge since the the Thirty Years War, I do not want to tarnish the name of House Romante any further.

I am about to undertake a few things that will directly challenge this man who pulls all the strings, this puppetmaster or chessmaster.

I do not know what might become of this, but I will give you copies of all that I do. Rest easy, the path I walk down on now is not the dark path that we talked about.

The mask is off.

What this means for the future, I do not know. If we make it through all of this, know that I will always serve you.

A letter left in Tristan's rooms in Firen palace, along with a bottle of crisp white wine from Melisande's private stock.

Dearest cousin,

After the Selection is settled, I need you to take passage to Four Corners and speak with the Ministry of Blades there. If there are mercenary companies who are not loyal to the Thorn, I would have them— if not to deny them from their contracts being purchased by the Thorn at least, to also augment our troops as well. You will need to speak with Lord Sir Raymund about which Lancer will be assigned to you for the journey. And you will take one, Tristan, or I will be upset with you. You stand too close to the throne and I fear what may happen if the Thorns revisit old tactics.

Before he left, Lord Aidric Charing mentioned a certain man we have in our custody that has knowledge of the loyalties of the mercenary companies. You have my leave to speak to him as you need before you depart.
