Letters from

Alina

to

Tristan  Marcus

Sent by Moongazer

In a private cipher that they had worked out when they first started working together.

Lord Tristan,

I have heard little and less from Galenthia in recent days. How does your search fare? Are things well, or worsening? Here the last reports I have from the north are a stalemate with the Icenalians. I wonder at the next move, or if perhaps our adversary has overplayed himself. Any information you have would be appreciated, and I will send you any other that I uncover as well.

On a more personal matter, I am sure by now word has reached you of my betrothal to a knight of Aequor. It pains me that it was not you. Whatever happens in the future, know that I remember every moment we had with the greatest fondness and love. I suspect it will be wisest for us not to cross paths for some time in person, lest our emotions override our sense. I will be faithful to my husband-to-be, even if it is you I wished for.

I do miss you, and think of you every day.

Lady Alina

In the cipher known only to main line al'Sylenthar.

Marcus—

Don't be an idiot and get yourself killed. I'm glad to hear my husband to be is in one piece, if you see him, remind him that I didn't think al'Callenta were incapable of using their letters… which is to say, if you must use small words that he may understand, he should at least write me himself sometime.

So it does not surprise you: you're to be an uncle soon. Keep that to yourself for now, though, Father does not wish the information out any more than I do, not until he's made his decisions on what must be done. Who knows what game he can make of half-Galenthian children? I do not, but it worries me to find out.

Our friendly game-player seems to be stirring the Syndicate to action against itself. Luckily, the Compact still holds in Aequor— though barely. Keep your eyes on any of the Syndicate you make contact with up there. I wouldn't trust them. It just takes one of the houses to decide to break the Compact and chaos will reign again. Four Corners is almost bursting with barely concealed violence. I suspect the bastard Syndicate of Galenthia is at each others throats, but I have little proof of it of yet. I suspect the Chessmaster knows naught of the Compact, which is good for us.

Stay safe, warm, and try not to seduce the archduchess's cousin. Or rather, do seduce her, and tell me about it in your next letter. I need a good laugh.

Your sister,
Alina
