Letter To

Dacian

During a quiet moment in their room at the Inn, the Pearl reclined upon a couch and silently watched him as she often did. Raevyn was seated at the writing desk, having sharpened the quill and set to dipping it into the ink pot. He would take his time to write, for his penmanship was not as graceful or swift as some. It came with awkward loops and swirls and while mostly legible, it just had a feel about it that gave away his heritage. He had some training in his youth, only not enough to be proficient to allow his penmanship to pass for that of nobility.

The first letter went through various manifestations and versions that ended up in crumpled piles. The Pearl had offered to aid him with his words but he refused politely, wishing for the letter to be written from the heart. He eventually decided on one path he was used to, one that outlined his prowess as a bard, even if he had never earned that distinction officially.

The quill would float in the air before him as he worked out the words, saying them out loud to note the reaction that Julieta had. She approved but didn’t wish to interrupt his thoughts and in fact had told him she was to retire to bed, leaving him alone with a burning candle to finish his thoughts and put them to page.

The first letter was to Casimir.

The stars have never been so bright,
as they were on that cool winter night.
Your breath vaulted me across dark skies ,
as if I grew wings to soar and fly.

My heart flutters with your song,
as now I am bound to ever long
Until the dawn brings you back
know my life shall forever lack.

Gilded cages and military decree,
shall never keep me from being free.
For I will not deny,
Thought of you remains in mine eye.

Be well, my Knight.
Stray true and fight.
I shall wait for another cool winter night.

Signed,

Your Little Bird

The candle had burned half way when he finished and signed the first letter. He read it back, over and over. He was finally satisfied. If the letter was lost, none would know who it was for. The envelope would state it to the Lieutenant of the Lightning Brigade, but outside of that, should someone open it and lose it, the actual letter reads as a lover’s poem. It was as lover’s poem.

He smiled until his heart turned heavy upon the matter of the second letter. There would be no poems but it would still be from the heart and anonymous. His life had taught him never commit to words upon paper.

At least this letter he wrote without pause. He knew what he had burning in his heart.

My Lord,

The days I have spent long without you begin to press upon me how much I truly do miss you. I have struggled to accept life without you and I do not wish it so. These past few years have been some which I will treasure for eternity. I miss you dearly and I wish to serve you still.

I admit, I am fearful for you. I think awful things and hope none of them come to be. Though I beg to know why you have not come for me, why you have left me so?

If this letter finds you, I only wish to see you again, so I may tell you things I couldn’t before. I hope I did not wait too long to say them and that you will come.

I had to make some choices to survive, so you’ll have to look now toward the Academy of Courtesans the next you are within Four Corners. Ask for the Little Bird and news of me shall be delivered.

I will always be your servant, your friend, your companion.

With Hope,

Your Rose.

He did as best he could to stamp and seal the two letters. He would leave them tucked away until the morning could see them given to Julieta and sent off to the couriers, or, her sources.
