my dearest Ry,
You know as well as I, telling me to not worry shall have as much results as telling you to not do the same for me.
Our sister did write of her mission of taking the gates and the success of it. Though I am sure by now you have heard by now the details of their work, and more, and so I shall not repeat them for you. I shall admit, I worried to hear she took Sir Graham with her…to have tested him so after only a few lessons!
I have been there for Lady Elaine as I can, I know she worries greatly for her father. Though I fear I was upon patrol when the news came and late in catching her before word reached her. Though it was not whispers of rumors that did beat me, for her father did see to having her written. But hope is restored and spirits bolstered. But worry is what we do for our family and those we love.
I had hoped for this year that we might actually have chance to celebrate your birthday proper with the time you had come to be spending at Roseguard, but it does seem the One has decided it will again not be so. When you return we shall have to see to something, but for now, I send a token so that you might have something to enjoy while yet there in Goldhollow. For I know the supplies are short, we are sending what can be spared. There has been word about disruptions amongst the trader routes, Jaren has heard some word. Though it seems yet unclear if it is matters between the trade Houses or something that is also stemming from these issues with the Thorns. Thankfully though, our harvest was good this year and you know our people, we are sufficient enough upon our own. Though some things are beginning to dwindle and lack. I shall be out of grapes soon enough.
Be well my brother and return home so you might tell me the tales of battle and I you of my need duties, the hunts and to speak further of what hope is had.
With much love,
Em
Included with the letter was a small box of the hard candies she often slipped into his packs, those that they had shared in their youth as favorites, including a few of those interesting things that passed for suckers but with the funny name! The paper that the box was wrapped in, while plain upon the outside, once unwrapped did show to be anything but plain upon the inside. Color upon endless color swirled in patterns upon the paper. Not making up any particular picture, but simply a celebration of color itself. Perhaps some small attempt to simply brighten the moment and day, knowing the paper was likely to be torn and cast aside.
