Work. Work. Work.
But the work offered some small respite from the cold weather. Teams from across the camp, regardless of family loyalty are ensuring the camp has enough lumber to make sharpened stakes, barricades and siege engines. A steady and thankless task away from the direction of the intended siege that knows little end as trees are felled and those unfortunate enough to be injured are dragged back through the forest to the healers. The lumber is also dragged, stored and made ready for its dark and deadly use. The sound of axes thunking, wood tearing and falling and crashing. The sounds of men and women preparing for a siege.
Stakes are whittled ready to be hammered into the cold ground to maim horses and counter fleeing enemies. Ladders are strung together and piled. Locations for cutting off the town are drilled into the heads of those who'll man the barricades, ceaseless training, sparring and the noises of a camp of war keep the cold at bay and idle hands from too much mischief. An unending circle of pickets, planning and quiet hope for a swift siege that doesn't leave too many wives bereft and families poor.
The usual business of war as the camp waits for their reinforcements.
(Sent in a +request regarding preparations, just a reference to the efforts of countless NPCs who serve in some way us knights, squires, lords, ladies and priestesses. Wulf.)
