Dear Sister,
Forgive me for how long it took to get back to you. Things have been moving quickly here in the front and it has left me little time for simple pleasures like writing you a proper letter, but having found the time I write you now.
Ah, where to begin, firstly Gabriel has recovered and so our prayers are answered in that regard, and there has been a battle, my first true battle, which we won. It was hard fought but we drove the vanguard of the enemy back and lost no men or women of station and rank. I did not see your Joffrey fight, as he was with the infantry and I with the cavalry, but, I hear he did well. We now face a monstrous force of barbarians come down from the north, which is a blessing because we would otherwise need spend many men and much time hunting them down had we taken the fight to them. We are well fortified here, and while they seem to have greater numbers we are better trained and so the advantage remains in our hands.
However this situation has led to a bit of a stalemate as we do not have the strength to oppose them in the field directly nor do they have numbers to assault our position. While frustrating, for I long to end this campaign swiftly and gloriously it does allow time for things such as this letter.
Further, I am to understand that my wedding to the princess Bella Viscarin will be within a few weeks. I admit I am not sure how to take that news, and it is probably horrible of me, but I am most excited for the canon the match will bring, which should, if used properly bring an end to this war. Yes, I know the girl is fair and well-read and all the other virtues heaped upon her and should be anticipating wedding her not gaining canon for our side but I find myself feeling tepid over the union. I know this woman, no, girl, not and if you will keep this secret I wonder if she would not rather be marrying Gabriel than I. After all it was him who won her.
One! Such melancholy. Forgive me for that. Anyhow, having read your letter a few times since receiving it, I have taken steps to correct my oversight in regards to your birthday and have arranged some gifts which I think you will enjoy, to be delivered when I arrive for my wedding. I hope they will make up for my mistake.
Other than that, I out of news I think other than the day to day of the camp. However I hope you are well and happy and will share whatever news of Murnord there might be. No detail too trivial.
Your brother,
Michael
A message written by Genoveffa in her flowing script, written in response to Michael's last to her.
Dear Michael,
Your latest news brought me great joy. I am very happy to learn that our brother has healed and that you finally got to fight although I truly wish you could have spent the entirety of your life never having to raise a sword against another. I know that might make me sound like the silly girl I think you and Gabriel often think of me as but that is alright. I still wish that could have been true. Thank you for passing on the news of how well you and our brother are as well as news of Lord Joffrey. If you see either of them soon please pass on my well wishes to them as well as playfully poke the both of them for not having written me back.
From what Father told me, it sounds like combat is much like chess where both sides are brought to an impasse, a situation which must be horrible for you as it surely must mean a lot of waiting for the other to move while they are doing the same, causing much in the way of frustration and perhaps even anger. I am not a tactician but even then, I can see the advantage in times such as those, a time where an army can rest an regroup and better plan, both for attack as well as defense. I hope you and the others will be able to do so and gain the upper-hand on the enemy.
I understand why you feel the way you do about your up and coming nuptials but I do feel that you are over-thinking yourself. If our fathers wanted for Bella to be married to Gabriel then that is to whom her hand would have been offered to. But instead, they chose you, Brother. They thought you worthy for each other so perhaps you should be grateful for the blessings The One has bestowed upon you. Find what happiness you can in the situation as well as in her and pray she will be able to do the same to her.
Now you can stop being silly about this whole thing, yes?
I appreciate you thinking of me, even belatedly. As much as gifts are not necessary, save for the return of my brothers, I do have to admit to being a bit curious as to what it is you thought to get for me. Do not tell me, however as I will be very put out with you if you spoil the surprise for me.
Now that your baby sister has dispense with both wisdom and gratitude, I shall end this letter here. Tell everyone I know hello for me, please. As always, lighting candles and praying. I miss you.
Love,
Genoveffa
