Letholdus

To Lady Claire; Tuesday the 08th of Juillet, 1865 IE.

Fortress Benide is a cold, stark place on the outside, and a reasonably warm if spartan place on the inside. There are traders, merchant ships that come up the half frozen river while it's passable, some of the Militant Order of the Reliant, but mostly the Fortress is filled with my brother and sister Templars. There is no flash, no wealth to be displayed up here, not even in the Cathedral. Locals from the Barony and elsewhere come and go regularly.

It is both like home and yet not. Northern Aequor is a very foreign place that feels like an entirely different world. I can only imagine with mild horror what it must be like up here in the dead of winter. I hear that the sun does not even break over and rise above the horizon in the middle of winter over the wastes leaving the world in darkness day and night.

Yesterday the Baron Artos D'Acuto volunteered to lead a group on patrol, as the Templars regularly patrol and scout. We gathered up Sir Gabriel, myself, Sir Henric, Sir Oberyn and a few others. As the day warmed a fog began to arise and we turned back - only to be ambushed by a force of the Icenaila tribesmen upon the northern road, west of Benide. It became ugly fast and from the west the Princess knight Atries al'Ramar arrived to aid us, leaping into the frey. The Icenaila had archers in the trees, horsemen on stolen war horses from House al'Callenta, and a huge chieftain who easily stood seven feet tall.

It was rough going, but Sir Atreis and I managed to bring down their chieftain. A few of the others then yielded and Sir Oberyn went after the archers in the trees. Sir Henric and Sir Oberyn were both wounded, and Sir Gabriel was badly so. I took no harm myself. I have information yet to gather while I am up here ere I may plan on returning south.

I received your letter. It was a pleasure to read, my lady. I hope that Four Corners treats you well and you keep yourself occupied and in good health. I look forward to reading more from you.
