Every able bodied knight and martially inclined Lord has gathered here for the Grand Melee. Each fighter is dressed in a gambeson and armed with a tourney weapon. There are quite a few shields in sight, each of them painted with the arms of the House that the contestant owes allegiance too. As the clock ticks towards the start anticipation rises amongst both the fighters and the audience. The absolute battle-ground-like chaos of a melee is about to begin!
Viscount Ludovic is not amongst the participants, instead he is stood in the main viewing area dressed in his tournament finery. A nod from the Viscount and a Herald dressed in the yellow and black of his house takes over. "Please move into the starting areas."

Lord Sir Zayne d'Rana is here wearing his tourney armor and carrying a large blunted blade. Its not as big as his standard greatsword but its still rather large much like the man himself. Several of the Black Bears are gathered amongst the spectators to watch and when the event is announced as about to begin the men let out a roar among themselves as Zayne steps into the ring.

Helena walks into the arena in her own set of tourney leathers, with a surcoat over all that. Carried over her shoulder is a longsword, a two handed affair that is the same size to scale as Zayne's weapon. The battleborn and a few horned knights cheer for her as she rests the sword into the ground, point first. "Who wants some?" She calls out with a loud voice, the last event, might as well go out with a bang.

Present for this event as well, Jarret has his tourney armor on and weapon with him. He's gotten in place, watching the other competitors rather carefully for the moment. He doesn't do much more than watching people so far, expression a bit distant.

Having lost the duels and not taken part in the joust Olivia has been looking forward to this event. This is what she excels at after all and the Centurion arrives wearing a slightly lighter version of her lorrica. She looks very much Imperial and forigen with her segmented war skirt and plumed helmet rather than the more traditional styles seen here. She carries her bastard sword and a large rounded shield as she enters the field. Off to the side nine Imperial men and women offer her a silent salute that she returns with a nod as she enters the arena and prepares to do battle.

As the event starts, Jarret moves for one of the other competitors, a large swordsman. There's an exchange of blows, lasting for a little while before Jarret manages to beat that particular opponent, letting out a breath as he does, before he turns towards the next opponent.

Helena blinks as she turns and sees someone who tries to actually take her out early, someone from one of the Tarris lands or some such, she barely sidesteps the attack before twirling her blade and knocking the man against the arena wall. It's not fancy, and honestly the end for her was very much too close. "Backstabbing wretch." She says with a haughty sound in her voice.

As the bugle sounds the field surges forward as each knight and martial noble fights to get away from the edge. Fights break out almost immediately, with some knights being singled out and beat down into the dirt within minutes and others splitting off into temporary teams for their own mutual protection. This early in the match its absolutely chaotic. Over a hundred armed men and women moving and fighting in a space barely large enough to contain them all. Numbers drop fast however and there is an almost constant ferrying of unconscious (and occasionally broken) bodies off the field.

As the event begins Olivia finds herself facing down a Horned Knight. A friend of Sir Augin it would seem. The man rushes at her intent on knocking her out of the competiton but she faces him and exchanges blows before tripping him to the ground and disquilifying him. She doesn't spare him a glance, instead leaping over the fallen man to get to Helena when she spots the woman. "You want another challenge My Lady? Maybe you will even win this time." She teases the woman as she moves across the field to engage her.

A massive man in d'Geroux colors wielding an axe and shield is the first to fall to Zayne. The man made the mistake of charging the Bear and Zayne promptly cut him down to size, not litterally but still the man will likely be hurting come tomorrow. Scanning the arena briefly Zayne looks for a worthy opponent now that his first has fallen.

Up in a stand and draped in her luxuriously heavy beaver-trimmed cloak, Myrana is here to watch the Melee. There's real fire in her blue eyes as she bunches her hands in the lap of her skirts, silver bracelets clattering together and her bright earrings swinging forward as she leans out to see. Her snowy hair is loose down her back and falls around her face in soft profusion, causing her to shake it from her eyes distractedly during the first clash. Beneath that dark fur cloak, she's dressed in a blue-green kirtle of warm cashmeri. Despite these warm, rich clothes, she's freezing, and chafes her cold-pinked hands together avidly, making her signet ring flash.

Then Zayne takes out a D'Geroux knight and she laughs outright, delighted. "Yes! Hahaha!"

Helena smiles at Olivia. "Behind you." She says before turning and blocking a close attack, and then she steps in and sweeps her blade up, a nasty crack is heard as the man, a horned knight, is left on the ground with a rather splayed nose. She turns to look up at Ludovic, raising her sword with the point towards him. "That's going to be you the next time we spar!" She says before stepping over the fallen knight and moving onto the next piece she has to fight.

Frowning as he faces another opponent, Jarret lets his instincts take over. There's a few moments as he simply defends against the attacks, waiting for the right time, before he attacks, taking the opponent down relatively quick. There's not another pause, as he turns for the next one.

It becomes slightly less chaotic as the unlucky and merely untalented, are knocked out of the event. Already there are a hefty number of knights being fussed over by the d'medici healers that have responsibility for the events healing. Rapidly the numbers on the field reduce..

Olivia whirls around as she is once more engaged, this time by a burly Galenthian with a sword and shield to match her own. She manages to hold her ground but she cannot defeat him. However another manages to do so for her and she backs off as her previous opponent falls, trying to get her bearings and keep going.

Zayne charges another man, this one a sly looking sort from Tarris that had being going to attack Helena. He easily intercepts the man and after a few traded blows he knocks the man into the dirt and moves on once more.

Ludovic smirks at Helena's bravado. He doesn't call back though.

The numbers of contestants finally clear to the point where it is possible to pick out your actual targets and engage in some 'tactics'. A large groups of knights, brought together by circumstances, fight another group on the eastern flank of the arena whilst the western flank is made up much smaller groups locked in pseudo-battle.

Somehow Olivia finds herself face to face with Jarret yet again. With the beating he gave her before fresh in her mind she advances on him. "Come Bloodaxe. Lets see how well you do in round two." She charges him and attacks with a fury of quick yet still rather powerful blows. She grins at him from under her helmet as she faces him. "You still fight well. But this time I'm going to win." She declares as she tries to push him back with her blows.

Helena steps up to zayne and begins trading blows with the taller man. "C'mon red bear… let's give these people a show!" She says as she comes in with attacks with her huge longsword.

It would seem that Jarret hasn't fully recovered from the joust, and so he stumbles back a bit from the blows, before sinking down to his knees. Lifting his hand up a bit, he lets out a breath. "This time, you won," he replies.

Zayne grins as Helena advances on him. He brings his own large blade up to counterstrike against her. "As you wish my Lady!" He replies easily pressing his attacks in an aggressive fashion.

The field rapidly diminishes down to a pair of horned knights fighting a single blue cavalier, a man in Reine colours fighting someone from Hawkness, Zayne and Helena and Olivia.

With a sweeping flourish the blue cloaked cavalier somehow downs both of his opponents. How did that happen? Meanwhile the man from Hawkness and the man from Reine continue their duel.

Helena attacks with a ferocity not seen since her fight with Teleko, she is a growling, wild woman as that huge blunted longsword crashes against zayne's sword, useing a very strong form to bust through his defense. "C'mon, stop backing up and fight like a knight." She says through gritted teeth.

"Don't let up, D'Rana!" Myrana cheers from the noble stands, leaning on the front railing to shout in excitement so that her braid swings forward and her jewelry all jangles. "We can bang that out!" She… probably means the huge dents in armor.

There is a sudden roar from Olivia as she rushes towards Zayne. Her shield is raised and her blade is pointed straight for the man as she runs straight at him in a terrifying charge. Its meant to aid Helena and scare the man because she stops just feet away and whirls around to rush towards the now free blue cavalier instead.

Jarret has managed to drag himself off to the sidelines now. Sitting down there, he shakes his head a little, leaning back against something.

Zayne actually laughs at Helena's taunt. "Fight like a knight? I'll have you know mercenaries fight much better than knights. I would know because I'm a mercenary first and a knight second. It was an accident, the knighting. I'm too good for my own good." He admits as he sweeps his blade up to block and then presses forwards again. Myrana's words have him blushing a bit. Does she even know how that sounds?! So embarrassing. Olivia scare attempt has his eyes widening but he still manages to push through it and focus on the fight.

The Blue Cavalier swivels to face Olivia, his narrow sword sweeping up in a rather flamboyant salute. He moves like a dancer, flowing from stance to stance, making the entire thing look easy from a distance. At the range Olivia is at however it is possible to see sweat beading in the creases of his furrowed brow and the look of intense concentration in brown eyes.

Meanwhile off to the side the Reine makes a daring sweep in towards the man wearing the Hawkness colours. They tussle briefly before both fall, struggling, into the mud. They wont be a problem anymore.

Helena growls and presses her attack. "Knights are the best, ever, in everything. Maybe you should have put a bit more powder on your pretty little nose d'Rana." She says as she attacks high, then low, then midsection, then a strong overhead attack. Her speed is remarkable, and the look in her eyes is pure excitement.

Zayne is giving it his best. But Helena is a really good opponent and Zayne seems to really enjoy facing her. He growls back his eyes shining with good humor. "I don't wear powders. But thanks for the compliment about my nose." He retorts with a smirk. "Yours is actually much prettier though." He admits in a low tone as he swings his blade around for another attack.

Olivia flashes the Blue Cavalier a deceptively sweet smile and then switches up her own stance. She moves fluidly, her sword much bigger than his but her movements almost just as graceful. She manages to wear him down a bit in their first trade of blows and she takes in his look of concentration with a sly smile. "Don't think too hard now Sir. This is a contest of blades not brains." She teases the man a bit and winks before slicing her blade at him again.

Ludovic moves to his feet and yells "Come on Olivia! Don't let me down!"

Helena continues to push harder. "I'm glad you find me pretty, but I'm also wiser." She says with a smirk, and then the clash happens, perfect form, neither giving an inch, the dirt and sand being pushed back by the force of their clash, and the echo sending birds in the distance into flight. "That's what I'm talking about…"

The bystanders watch with rapt fascination as Zayne and Helena both give an amazing display of weapon mastery.

Olivia hears that familiar voice cheering her on. For a moment she gets distracted peering towards where Ludovic sits. It gives her foe an advantage. She growls and refocuses now eyeing the man with renewed determination. She HAS to win this. She has a handsome man cheering for her! Oh the curse of being twitterpated with a man.

Zayne's form is getting better now, he pushes himself and keeps pace with the woman even though she seems to have the upper hand. "I won't deny that at all My Lady, wisdom is not what I am known for. But I still have some skills." He smiles faintly as their blades meet and sparks fly off the metal. Its an epic battle to be sure, one the spectators likely enjoy.

The Blue Cavalier takes full advantage of Olivia's distraction, stepping into a series of attacks that would have genuinely hurt if only his blade was actually sharp. As it is she is driven into defending, temporarily unable to manage an attack.

"Try making faces!!" Myrana shouts from the stands. Helpful.

At the sidelines, Jarret has gathered enough strength to get back to his feet, and is now making his way away from the area, not looking back to see how things are going.

Zayne is struggling, sweating as he continues to hold his ground against Helena. Its a good close match and his eyes gleam with life. "I'm going to have to ask you for a spar sometime after this I think My Lady. You are a fun opponent to face!" He admits with a grin as he defends himself once more and then tries to strike back.

Helena keeps up with the man and yet feels herself being pushed backwards. "I agree, we can learn the upper skill of swordplay together." She states as she continues her blocks and parries and attacks. "Just remember, once you beat me, you still have the imperial to fight, and she is a step above me."

Speaking of the Imperial she has just sent her last opponent into the dirt, hard. The poor Blue Cavalier likely lands on his butt in the mud from the force of her blows. That done she peers around. Seeing only two left she squares her shoulders and charges into the fray, focusing on Helena this time.

With the removal of the Blue Cavalier the field is now down to Helena, Zayne and Olivia. Helena seems to be winning the match against Zayne, barely.

Helena blinks as she is attacked by two of them at the same time. Unable to keep them both at bay she takes two hard hits from each of them and falls, though zayne ultimately scored the winning blow against her. "It took two of you to take me out." She says as she leans against the arena wall to watch the rest of this.

"Sorry Lady Helena. I owe you a drink after this." Olivia declares as the woman is defeated. She sizes up her next opponent that is Zayne. She is aware this is the final match and she gives it her all, charging in to attack with true ferocity.

"Oh my goodness, my vassal seems to be the best one out there." Myrana gloats to the nearby Aequorans, smiling like the smug devil. "More lambic please."

Zayne is a bit out of breath at this point but when Helena goes down he seems relieved. She was tough! One more to go! The Black Bears on the sidelines elbow and shove cheering loudly as Zayne makes it to the final two. Zayne just smiles tired but too excited to quit just yet, and then he charges.

Myrana takes the newly filled cup of raspberry beer and takes a sip of the frothy pink liquid. Then she leeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeans out, and bats her eyes insolently at the nearest D'Geroux. HAH.

Olivia smirks as her sword clashes with Zayne's own large blade. She holds her ground, neither giving nor gaining as they face each other down. The man is bigger than her, likely stronger too But the Centurion fights well all the same pressing forward without hesitation.

Ludovic glances across at Myrana then back at the fight, then Myrana, then the fight, looking a little indecisive about tearing his eyes away from the match. Eventually though he yields enough to lean over to Myrana and half-whisper "Are you drunk?"

"What!" Myrana is startled by the question, and looks at Ludovic with a bewildered kind of innocence. "No, of course not." Yes. A little.

"Ah, alright." Ludovic says, turning his attention back to the arena and hiding a grin. "Thought you were when you stretched forward like that." he gives her chest a meaningful look before lifting his eyes to her face. Still looking amused he looks back to the fight."

Zayne continues pushing himself, though its obivious the man is a bit tired. Still he soldiers on, blocking and attacking with a grin to Olivia as they fight.

"Stretched…" Myrana squints at Ludovic, and then looks down at her kirtle beneath the heavy fur cloak, cheeks flushing in panic. But no. No buttons have burst off of it like missiles, and her clothes fit perfectly, as always. She lifts her head again and peers at Ludovic as if to ask him if HE'S drunk, but then looks back at the field, gasping.

Suddenly Zayne's attack catches Olivia and slips under her guard. Its with a look of surprise that she has her blade knocked from her hand and is sent sprawling onto the ground. She growls but gets up and dusts herself off. She nods to Zayne looking disappointed but not commenting on it. The man was good. That much was true.

Zayne sweeps his blade in a wide arc, hard and fast as soon as he sees an opening. he follows it up with a hit to Olivia's legs that finally sees the woman go down. With his free hand he wipes his brow and looks around. "Anyone else want a go?" He asks with a good natured grin.

Ludovic does look rather pleased with himself as he watches Olivia and Zayne fighting. As they battle and Olivia starts to show flaws he leans forward, looking mildly concerned and forgetting all about his minor victory (Did you see her cheeks?) over Myrana. At the side of the box Lord, Sir, Augin d'Korbina, still dressed in his melee garb leans against the side of the box and holds out a hand. "What?." Ludovic asks his cousin a little grumpily. Augin just winks and this seems to be enough to tell Ludovic what he wants. Dovi sighs and he tosses a pouch at his cousin. "Fine. You win."

Moving to his feet he takes a moment to adjust his bearskin cloak before lifting his voice. "Lord Sir Zayne d'Rana is melee champion. Congratulations on your win Lord Zayne."
