History Of The War Of The West (68-74)

The War of the West was a war that was fought between the Allied Powers (or the Forces of the New Faith) and the Central Powers, (or forces of the Faith) from Mars 1868 until Janvier of 1874. Some historians would call it a war over religion, as it took place at the time of the Bloody Schism when the Order Militant of the Reliants were declared heretics and given partial blame for the Sealing of Rikton, as well as Aequor's refusal to give over the Prince Sylvain al'Ramar. However, in retrospect it should be viewed as a mainly political conflict with a slight religious element.

Scholars have argued over why King Maris and Queen Cynthia al'Ramar refused to surrender the Prince to Kentaire for a second trial, the first having been a trial by combat by the Princess Atreis al'Ramar (who was not Crown Princess until the death of Saint Jean-Paul). Some argue that Cynthia was too distraught over the loss of her first born son and couldn't bear the loss of another. Others would argue that it was shrewd military manoeuvring by both Aequor and Galenthia. Whatever the reasoning, the end result would be war.

Timeline of events

Winter 1867: The exact date is unknown, but five cohorts of the 2nd Volmar Legion make their way into the lands of d'Kemp, and begin construction of a wall to block the only route through the pass to the d'Kemp lands.

1868

Marse 17th: The wall is completed, and the d'Kemp forces and Kentaire Legion cohorts begin fortifying the countryside beyond the wall.

Avril 2nd: During the beginning of the Aequorian Spring season, King Maris al'Ramar orders Baron Ramius d'Arran to create a Legion to march and reclaim d'Kemp lands. He sends the Baron's wife, Baroness Myrana d'Armaz to speak on behalf of the crown in hope of peace. After a failed meeting with the Praetor of the 2nd Volmar and the Baron d'Kemp, both sides send Moon Gazers to their liege Lords and ask for instructions, then settle in for confirmation. (Logs: Spring Thaw's March, Letter to al'Ramar)

Avril 4th: The Order Relient and the New Faith make their position on the matter known by sending over 500 Relients to join and aid the Arrani Legion. (Log: Relient's Orders)

Avril 7th: The Arrani Legion receives their orders, and begins a bombardment of the d'Kemp Wall in an attempt to create a breach. Both sides fire and hammer each other.

Avril 10th: The Arrani Legion creates a breach after three gruelling days of an artillery duel between themselves and the Forces of the Faith. Using Alchemy, the Arrani Legion charges the breach under cover of the alchemical smoke, and takes the Wall with very little losses. This will eventually be called the Battle of d'Kemp's Wall. (Log: The Wall)

Avril 15th: The Arrani Legion marches north to take the fight directly to the heart of the d'Kemp Barony. While their scouts are deployed, the main body is ambushed by a unit of Kentaire Rangers and Legionairies and dealt some casualties, including several of their commanders and knights. While only a skirmish, this marks the first defeat for the Arrani Legion since the campaign began. From henceforth, their progress north will be slower. (Log: The Bloody Road North)

Avril 15-30: The Arrani Legion and their allies regroup, attempting to deal with the Kentairish Praetor Surelius and induce him into quiting the field of battle honourably. He declines, but mentions that if they lose the next battle, his troops will surrender. Battle is joined when both armies march into the middle of Elder's Valley. A bloody battle is fought there, which teeters both ways before the steadfastness of the Arrani infantry and commital of reserves decides it for the Allies. True to his word, Praetor Surelius, his Kentarish troops and mercenaries surrender, while the d'Kemp forces retreat north into their stronghold at Elder's Eye. (Log: Battle of Elder's Valley)

Avril 30: Baroness Myrana d'Armaz speaks words of power, and magic returns in full force to Tirth. This will have momentuous consequences for the entire world. (Log: Tirth Awakens)

Early Mai: Following the Battle of Elder's Eye, the Galenthians receive word that Rikton has invaded the Fallow Lands through Kentaire's territory. Kentaire, likewise, makes a massive landing in the Duchy of Alasce and begins to fan out from their disembarkation sites in large force. The Galenthians depart Elder's Valley, marching back to embark on ships and help relieve their countrymen's battle against Rikton. Meanwhile, the Arrani Legion presses onwards to the north.

Mai 07: Allegedly incensed by the Galenthia's new alliance with Aequor, weak leadership of Queen Melisande, the lack of direction from Viscount Henric Cassomir and unwilling to bear the cost of yet another war, Maric Cassomir, heretofore appointed Steward of the fallow Barony of Rivergate, seized power in the Cassomir lands.

A dizzying array of events followed. Firstly, Viscount Henric's troops, other than his Iron Guard, largely stepped aside and facilitated the coup. Maric then promised his nephew that he would be able to keep his title and his seat at Roseguard Castle and the city of Ironhold, while the capital of the Kingdom would be moved to Rivergate on Lake Dauntless. Once the Viscount agreed and stepped aside, Maric declared the County's independence from Galenthia and armed neutrality in this new war. Finally, he divorced his new royal house from the Cassomir line, though Viscount Henric and the new King Maric's brother, Beric, have elected to maintain that name, essentially severing the link between the two lines.

King Maric of House Damarian, of the Kingdom of Ironhold now rules over a rich, well armed and compact nation of hills, rivers and lakes, which will likely be well disposed to whatever the new order around it is. Though called a Kingdom, it truly has the strength of a Duchy.

Mai 24: With Queen Melisande of Galenthia, the Galenthian army and their Kentairish prisoners embarked, the fleet of Sokar Red Sail vessels begins its journey towards Four Corners and then Firen. While at sea in the central ocean, they are set upon by the forces of the Pirate Queen of Ryalta under command of Captain Ursus Black. Although initially focusing on sinking the ships containing Kentairish soldiers, Captain Black boards the vessel that the Queen is on and a desperate fight ensues, with Black attemtping to capture the Queen. The boarding action is eventually repulsed with the aid of shards of falling ice (turning out to be thrown magically by Viscountess Sonya Kaedon). A request for treating between the Allies and Ryalta is set up in Four Corners. (Log: Seaward!)

Mai 31: Queen Melisande of Galenthia meets with Josephine Collins, the self proclaimed Pirate Queen of Ryalta. In exchange for Galenthia and Aequor recognising her as a legitimate Queen of a legitimate kingdom, the Red Mane swears to fight as an Ally against Kentaire and Rikton. (Log: The Red Queen of Ryalta)

Juin 17 - 25: The Arrani Legion marches forth and besieges Elder's Eye. The main army engages at the gates, while a small party of knights and nobles sneaks through an underground passage and enters the castle from below, opening the gates from within. Baron d'Kemp emerges and challenges Lord Zayne d'Rama, a d'Armaz vassal, to a duel. The Red Bear defeats Baron d'Kemp and the rebellion of that house is ended. (Logs: Elder's Eye Pt 1, Elder's Eye Pt 2, Elder's Eye Pt 3)

Juillet 02: The Senate of the West meets. With the support of Kentaire, Rikton stakes out the Central Powers' claim to conflict. They are joined by Navali, incensed by the legitimisation of their old enemies, Ryalta. The Allied Powers do not convince any neutral powers to join them, and all depart with little progress. (Log: Battle Lines in the Senate)

Aout 12 - Septembre 13: The victorious Galenthian Expeditionary army returns to their home country and occupies the vital city of Goldhollow, the key to the interior Fallow Lands. They are almost immediately besieged by Seigneur Rollo Tusca of Rikton and most of the Order Templar. Meanwhile to the south, the Lord Marshal of Galenthia Gauvain Tarris is cut off by Cardinal Teleko himself near the fort of Oracla, while the Knight Marshal Letholdus Romante is badly mauled by a Kentairish force to the north, though the victory is pyrrhic and not followed up.

With little chance of reinforcement other than small parties, the Goldhollow garrison fortifies their town, laying traps and constructing strongholds at key points throughout the city. An attritional battle is fought throughout the next month as the defenders retreat deeper and deeper into the city. In what might be termed the last stand, Rikton's forces and the Templars are stopped just ahead of the city's keep, partly by soldiers and partly by magic cast of Viscountess Sonya Kaedon. Disgusted with the war and having disagreed with his orders in the first place, Seigneur Tusca meets with the Goldhollow garrison commander, Baron Thomas Chandus, and informs him of his impending withdrawal. Tusca duels the Lord Captain Commander of the Order Templar, killing him and taking his position. The Templars and House Tusca subsequently withdraw from the war into neutrality. Goldhollow is a shattered wreck, but the Griffon flag of Galenthia still flies above it. (Logs: Siege at Goldhollow Pt I, Siege at Goldhollow Pt II, Siege at Goldhollow Pt III, Siege at Goldhollow Pt IV, A Parting of Ways)

The Lord Marshal also bests Cardinal Teleko around Oracla, forcing his withdrawal to the occupied areas of the Fallow Lands. This enables the buildup of Oracla into a formidable fortress town in the years to come.

Aout 30: King Maris orders the Arrani Legion and all available forces to march to the Duchy of Alasce (Province of Evalle) and relieve the beleaguered al'Morena, who are on the retreat after being defeated by Kentaire. Baron Ramius d'Arran is to lead this army. (Log: Court of Aequor)

Septembre 09: The Arrani Legion encounters the Kentaire XI Legion in an ambush by Alasce's Silver Crescent River. Occupying high ground, the Aequorians engage in a missile duel with Kentaire's firearms, while a small force of Reliants, d'Geroux Blood Seeker and d'Armaz engineers move to secure a key bridge across the river. Despite the weight of numbers and the element of surprise, the Aequorians manage to force their way across the Silver Crescent, causing Kentaire to withdraw. (Log: The Battle of Evalle)

Galenthian Fire Jars are discovered and created by Lady Belladona Ulsen.

14 Decembre: The night before All Feast Day in the Duchy of Alasce (Province of Evalle), three Kentairish legions descend on the Aequorian forces organised around the Arrani legion as they occupy a winter defensive line in vicinity of the Silver Crescent River. As the Kentairish troops cross the frozen river, the Aequorian general Baron Ramius d'Arran uses his Sidhe-Steel sword to unleash a fireball and collapse the ice, badly denting the attacking forces. The Aequorians use crossbows and other flanking missiles on the flank to funnel three Kentairish legions into a strong defensive line, while the Reliants and Black Bear cavalry duel Kentaire's own horsemen and hammer the enemy flanks. Meanwhile, the mercenary Altair uses his power to descend into the enemy line and disrupt them, while Lord Eisen d'Geroux sneaks into the enemy's depth and attacks one of their top commanders directly.

The fight continues throughout the night, but as time passes the understrength Arrani legion begins to roll up the Kentairish legionairies opposite them, destroying one and routing the others. Though they are bloodied, Baron Ramius d'Arran has won one of the greatest victories in military history and cemented his place as a legendary commander of the West. (Log: All Feast Day Eve Battle)

During the All Feast Day celebrations, the Queen of Galenthia bestows honours on various Galenthian regiments that fought at Goldhollow - the title "Royal Goldhollow Regiment" for that force, battle honours for the colours of all present and a special double gold stripe for the Royal Regiment of the Burnished Spur, recognising their selfless sacrifice at the last battle of the siege.

While conducting a clearance in force for the Fallow Lands garrison at Oracla, a small army composed of Chandus, Sedar and Njorfolk soldiers is ambushed on three sides by a much larger Rikton host under Cardinal Varyth Teleko which had completely eluded detection. The Galenthains, commanded by Baron Thomas Chandus, draw back into an all around defence and are assaulted by wave after wave of enemy troops. A quick plan for a breakout his hatched by the commanders. The integrity of the line is held by Sedar spearmen and men at arms while the Chandus Sun Shield Guards smash through the rear of the formation, screened by Njorfolk Vigamandr.

Led by Baron Sedar and his children, the Sedar force takes massive casualties under the onslaught, resulting in the extinction of their noble line. The Chandus and Njorfolk take fewer dead, though they are still badly mauled, and Jarl Ranulfr Raudi is captured by the forces of Rikton. This defeat marks a setback for Galenthia's forces in the Fallow Lands, as these banner forces are impelled to withdraw from theatre to reconstitute. However, Rikton's forces make no further moves over the next several months due to the amount of soldiers that the ambush has cost them.

D'Rana is conquered by the Legio III of Kentaire.

For a reward of services to the Crown, and to further stabilize the kingdom of Aequor, Baron Ramius d'Arran is elevated to the noble rank of Duke, and granted territorial rights and privileges of a Duke. The new al'Arran is also granted the lands of d'Kemp, and the clan heads of house Arran are granted Greater Lordships.

Through much experimentation and more than a few destroyed laboratories, Sir Bertram of Harcourt and several court alchemist of House d'Armaz develop several types of encased, explosive 'pods', terming them grenades. Beyond generic explosive grenades, they also develop "smoke pots". The research also results in improved and more reliable satchel charges, delighting engineers everywhere.

The grenades require extensive fuse work in order to utilise, confining them to trained engineers. Even well made grenades have a tendency to dud at least a third of the time and are extremely heavy due to the eccentric mix of compounds within them, significantly limiting their range. However, they prove their use, especially urban warfare and siege breakthroughs, though they certainly do not revolutionise warfare.

Aout
The Battle of Nightmares: The Lord Marshal Gauvain Tarris enters into a long field battle with the Cardinal Varyth Teleko. Over the course of the month, the two sides clash in multiple full scale battles with neither side declared the true victor. Attributed to the violence of the clashes, almost any soldier who fought there will claim that they had nothing but nightmares when they slept. The most common being that of a monster wielding a sidhe steel sword cutting down innocents and drinking their blood.

Months of negotiations by Baron Thomas Chandus result in the hiring of a full Dragon (2,000) of mercenaries for Galenthia. Arriving in Firen, they then march out and provide strong reinforcement to the Fallow Lands defences, stabilising the Galenthian line after a bad campaign year. The mercenaries are coordinated by the experienced hand of Lord Julian Venantius and retained on a rotating contract that regularly replaces their forces in theatre.

Meanwhile, the Royal Galenthian and Royal Aequorian Navies conduct exchanges with each other and with Ryalta's nascent navy, assisting in the development of that force that will eventually lead to the formation of the Red Ocean Fleet in 1872. These exchanges help bind the three allied countries together and their differing ways of fighting help foster improvements in tactics and techniques among all sides.

In the South, some the Caltu approach Viscount Thomas Chandus while others approach Viscount Sonya Kaedon for refuge. Both Counties and the Northern Duchy accept the refugees. Both House Chandus and House al’Arran are attacked by the Caltu's pursuers, forces of the Goblin King led by Lesser Sidhe Knights.

Though both houses engage the enemy on separate days, they both defeat the enemy. Both Duke al'Arran and Baron Chandus are challenged directly by the Lesser Sidhe Knights and they both slay the enemy commanders in single combat. They are both the first victories and the first battles against the Goblin Kingdom.

Several years of reverse engineering following Lord Eisen d'Geroux's capture of Kentairish firearms before 1868's All Feast Day battle in Aequor results in the widespread adoption of this weapon throughout the West. The new weapon, called the musket, replaces the older long cannon nearly everywhere. It is far more reliable and consistently performing and its components are mildly less expensive than its predecessor. However, it still suffers from the same issues of range, accuracy and reload time, though the latter is marginally improved. Notably, the adoption of the new muskets along with Kentaire's mortars serves to partially negate the Principality's advantage in technology.

After a freak accident with a pair of crystals that were retrieved from a skirmish deep in Goblin Kingdom territory, Aequor and Galenthia bring in a slew of engineers to examine the objects. Months of experimentation result in the development of powered flight. The caveat - these crystals are only available deep in the Ergonian Mountains, and they are extremely rare.

Never the less, airships and dirigibles both spring into existence. Airships are modeled after naval vessels and require large crystals to enable flight. They number less than ten in the entire Civilised West and laws quickly spring up restricting anyone other than Royal authorities of using them. Dirigibles, powered by a combination of crystal fragments and directed air, are slightly more common but unstable and still difficult to build, numbering less than a dozen per Kingdom.

The implications of these craft are still unknown, but Four Corners has been quick to pounce on sales of crystals with the alleged intent of starting up a neutral transport service. It remains to be seen whether or not this occurs.

Decembre

Decembre 15: A brilliant and very dangerous winter offensive was called for by the Lord Marshal of Galenthia, Duke Gauvain Tarris in order to push north and recapture the town of Mathis, which heretofore had been used as the Central Powers' headquarters. With the knowledge that time was of the essence and movement slow in the winter, troops from all over Galenthia came to the fortress at Oracla alongside a massive amount of supplies. They were joined by Arrani Legion forces, who combined with their cohorts of the Argent Legion's Cohort.

Unbeknownst to them, Cardinal Teleko had discovered the general intent of the allied plan and brought forward a large, highly skilled field force. The two armies would meet just south at Mathis. Bringing the best of the Allied forces and generals together in one arm, they faced Rikton's best regular troops, including its elite Holy Band phalanx and the Holy Knights of Rikton. More disturbingly, Teleko employed a whole host of supernatural beasts, including the undead, werewolves and vampires; once discovered, these creatures severely undermined the morale of Rikton’s troops, who until this battle had believed they had been fighting on the side of light. All were swept aside by the Allied army, which succeeded in conducting a double envelopment – surrounding and hemming Rikton’s forces in on both sides.

With the Allies closing in on him and his own army dead, fleeing, or unwilling to fight for a leader that employed forces of the dark, Teleko openly revealed himself as an uncanny, ancient sorcerer and vampire, employing magic on a scale never seen before to blast both friend and foe and attempt to decapitate the Allied army where it stood by killing its leaders. The energy blast he pushed out created a massive crater and caused horrific casualties on both sides. A desperate battle was then fought, as heroes of the Allied Powers from both Galenthia and Aequor charged in to stop Teleko, while Brigadiers Thomas Chandus and Dertan Kaedon aided by Lord Altair d'Armaz rallied the remnants of the army. Although the heroes severely wounded Teleko, he repulsed and nearly killed all of them, disappearing before he was killed.

Casualties on both sides were terrible. The Allies were still able to salvage a significant portion of their army, many of whom are walking wounded, but the forces mustered in their rear areas under the Knight Marshal Duke Letholdus Romante and the Keeper of the Seals Viscount Alfred Gwynain were busy ensuring that those who are wounded flow out to treatment and supplies continued to flow in. Of Rikton, their field force’s dead and wounded were significantly higher in number and worse off, having scattered widely following their rout and lacking much command, control and supply.

(Logs: Battle of Mathis Pt I, Battle of Mathis Pt II)

Shortly after the battle, the Allied Army pursued the remnants of Rikton's force into Mathis itself and besieged it there.

Janvier 07: A meeting at the Senate of the West ends the war in all but name. Aware of the shame of Teleko's manipulations, Rikton splits itself into two pieces - a Kingdom ruled by Rollo Tusca, the head of the Order Templar, and the Holy City itself. They are still associated but the temporal power is designed to check any ambitions that the Holy City has upon worldly matters as well as protect it from enemies. Kentaire withdraws its forces from Aequor, but is less battered and repentent. (Log: Peace at the Senate?)

Several months later, a true peace accord will be signed, ending truly the War of the West.
