Alazne had a relatively privileged upbringing, not nobility, but her parents were both extremely well educated and regarded surgeons of the sort frequently retained to attend those who did have titles. As such she never had to worry about going hungry, new clothes were a reality, she was educated to be literate and given professional training at arms in anticipation of her joining the town militia. A combination of a keen mind with her education, her parent's contacts and wealth, ensured a wide open future.
She did also entertain flights of fancy about running off, winning glory at war and becoming a knight, but her apprenticeship and bloody surgery ensured she knew full well the realities of combat especially with the succession war raging. She was good with weapons, exceptionally healthy, a good rider, but really much more inclined to want to try to ameliorate the horrible things that happened when armies clashed than join in. The eldest child of her family, she did spend a lot of time with other youths, though she remained somewhat isolated by the elevated social status of her family compared to most.
At least until the eldest son of the local lord, Sir Miguel Thrace, was half eviscerated by a lance strike when fighting in a nearby skirmish and dragged back to her parents to be saved. With a gut wound of that magnitude they never had any chance to succeed but that did not stop a grudge being held and after that a shadow fell over the fortunes of the family. Six months later, Alazne and her younger brother both found themselves conscripted into a newly called levy despite the efforts of their parents to buy their way out of it, a traditionally very successful tactic.
Alazne might have been well trained but her brother was sickly and completely ill suited to life as a soldier, he also had his head staved in by a blow from a knight's mace despite Alazne having sworn to protect him to her parents. She did however haul said knight from his horse with her halberd as he was distracted, knock him down, then stab him a half dozen times through the visor with a dagger in a surge of violent fury.
She had started off pretty well equipped for a levy, better than most men at arms, now she had the panoply of a knight (if ill fitting) after being rewarded for her feat of 'heroics', she fought as one thereafter through years of brutal murder, skirmishes, ambushes and raids, hating every moment of it but sworn to follow her liege and loath to abandon her companions. She knew how to mend wounds and fight infections, she could see how many of her companions she kept alive after every skirmish even if she hated the very fact they were fighting. More to the point she was sworn to the service of House Thrace and from her perspective continuing to fight was not something that was in the slightest optional. This did not stop her from getting a battlefield knighthood after she successfully covered the withdrawal of her (hated) liege lord from the battle during the Betrayal.
A few years later, eventually, thankfully, the Thorn was defeated and the company in which Alazne fought disbanded and pardoned. Left both extraordinarily guilty for her previous path and without goal Alazne turned to the church and faith, confessing in great detail only to find herself guided toward the path of the Reliant order after it emerged she was already a more than passably skilled healer. The past two years or so she has spent refining her education and initiating into the order, while no diplomat is still intent upon treading a productive path and has dedicated herself fully to serving the church and faith. As such she has spent some time in formal study of engineering and teaching on the basis that she can make more long term difference to the lives of a village if she can teach them to make a better well, or sturdy fortifications, than she can by trying to take her sword to bandits or even by succeeding in surgery upon an individual.
