Background
Rumor has it that Hraelfmir may have been born in Partharia to a woman of Aequor (who had been taken as a slave by White Hall raiders) to a dusky skinned Partharian prince. If there is any truth to that, it makes our man both bastard born and a former slave himself. But somehow or another he turned up in Four Corners as a boy. Now a man grown, he's worked his way up in the streets of Four Corners and took to ship, starting of course at the bottom as cabin boy. In time he has managed to prove himself capable, moving up the ranks until eventually he came by his own sloop and armed her - the Bonnie Lass. Now, you can bet there's a story there, if you can get him to tell you. Whatever happened, his ship's papers seem to be in order. Now.
Then there were the attacks on Four Corners by White Hall. The Bonnie Lass was damaged, partly burned, and Hraelfmir had to fight for his very life! He was seriously injured but took shelter in the keep with some of his crew and many others. Those were dark days and not just for our gallant Captain. Not long after that Hraelf managed to kidnap Eydis, a White Hall warrior woman! Everyone knows the scoundrel is a lady's man, but kidnapping the enemy's women is a great way to get the White Hall warriors riled up. And it worked! Jarl Aethelwulf Rastbrook himself took after Hraelfmir in the Scythe and once caught up with at sea they boarded and fought most fiercely. A number of Hraelf's crew were slaughtered and the Captain himself was very badly injured, nearly killed. But not before he shot Ranulfr twice in the chest and took down others with his blades. In the end, the northmen captured the Bonnie Lass, got Eydis back safely, and brought Hraelfmir back with them to White Hall. Our good Captain became the property of Eydis but would he become her 'tame man'?
It seems a deal was struck between Hraelfmir and Jarl Aethelwulf Rastbrook. If Hraelf led the White Hall fleet south to Partharia, and used the Bonnie Lass and his remaining crew to deceive the Partharians in and attack, then Aethelwulf proposed to give Hraelf his freedom and his ship back. It must have worked out- for after the battle Hraelfmir and his remaining crew eventually returned with their ship to Four Corners. It is rumored that the Captain later went south, taking his armed Privateer sloop, to join forces with the Pirate Queen herself; Josephine. There he may have taken part in the battle of Red Seas and in the end he returned with a captured and damaged Kentaire Singulaire, a type of Frigate, and a good deal of profit for his pains.
These days Hraelfmir has become a very wealthy man and done well by the wars. He has repaired his ships and is on his way to building a small fleet. A combat veteran, he is also building some small renown for himself. Hraelf was coined with the byname of 'Halfblood', given to him by Jarl Aethelwulf Rastbrook ere the White Haller died in battle. This Privateer captain now provides armed escort for merchant vessels and occasionally transports important nobility. Some say the Hraelfmir of old was also a smuggler and may have had Syndicate connections before he became a wealthy man, but there's no proof of that, now is there?
Recent Events:
On the 3rd of Avril, 1874, in Hellsmouth of Aequor, Hraelfmir met with Countess Mercedes 'Mercy' d'Juliano at her request. There she presented the Four Corners Captain with an offer of a formal Captain's commission into the Aequor fleet under the Admiral's command. Hraelfmir would be able to have dual citizenship, made Captain of the four masted Descanda named the Typhoon, and letters of Marque to hunt pirates along Aequor's coasts, much as he already does for Four Corners.
Following this promotion, Hraelfmir decided to sell his armed sloop, the Bonnie Lass, and invest his wealth more widely. Not only in Four Corners and Lyioness investments, but also to expand into the new airships that have begun to ferry people all over with such speed. Thus establishing the means to build upon his wealth even more quickly.
In May Hraelfmir was promoted to Commodore when Mercy decided to offer herself in exchange for her Captain and be ransomed by Lord Tallin - over Hraelf's objections. Later once she had her freedom, Hralefmir won the ranged shooting event at Countess Mercy d'Juliano's tournament. She bested him in the Melee though they were the last two fighters! Exciting stuff up high in the ship's mast. She also bested him in the Ship Jousting but it was close!
At the end of May it was announced that the commoner, Commodore Hraelfmir Halfborn has been taken as the Archduchess of Aequor's official Consort. Who would have guessed that Jasmina would ever pair up with the scruffy Privateer from Four Corners! There were also adventures concerning haunted lakes and flaming egg, and an exciting battle in the northern sea against invading White Hallers that didn't go well for Aequor.
MORE RECENTLY
In the time since, Hraelfmir has been engaged in hunting down and killing White Hall ships along the coast. /Then/ he heard about Jasmina's secession from Aequor to form her own Kingdom. Some say he was as taken by surprise as anyone! He returned just in time to attend Senate with Jasmina and trying to catch up on events he had missed. Oh boy.
Well then. Rumor has it that the Descanda 'Typhoon' with it's Aequorian crew, captained by Hraelfmir, actually belongs to Admiral Mercy d'Juliano's family. And thus, Hraelfmir had no choice but to return the ship and it's crew out of both respect and personal friendship with Admiral d'Juliano. He resigned his Commodore's commission and the ship has sailed north out of Four Corners for New Kashmir.
On the Grid
This man stands 5'10" tall before he pulls his boots on and is lean but muscularly fit enough. He tends to have a relaxed, languid poise and ease of movement. He is darkened by the sun to a light bronze with dark hair and eyes. A shadow of a beard graces his jaw, kept trimmed neat and short. This looks to be a man of the South, one used to dealing with heat, and yet when he speaks, he has a more northern lilt to his tongue that might suggest Four Corners.
If he is out and about in town, he may be dressed very nicely, lordly even. He wears a deep blue velvet coat trimmed in filigree silver thread work with artfully carved silver buttons. Subtle, dark embroidery up the back features the writhing tentacles of a great kraken. Medium-dark grey breeches are tucked into high black leather boots set with subtle silver buckles. A crisp white shirt is bloused with a lighter grey silk cravat set with a large pearl. A pair of hand cannons are tucked into a black velvet sash around his waste and a long cutlass with at least one dagger are rigged to hang from his black leather belt. The Captain has a golden ring on his left hand set with a deep blood red ruby carved in the flattened shape of a human skull.
-Or- more often he is dressed as the rogue he is in a loose white shirt, leather jerkin, grey or brown breeches, tall leather boots with red and grey silk sashes, two or three hand cannons, his cutlass and dagger, and have a gleam in his eye that suggests he may be looking for trouble. Same ruby skull ring.
Hraelfmir is a fellow who has a changeable personality. He may effect and reasonably pull off the guise of being a nobleman, refined and pretending to be well educated and high speech, or he may pass himself off as a common sailor with a thick, uneducated brogue from the north, or the south with equal parts flexibility. Generally he's a laid back fellow with a sense of humor, relaxed but keeps a sharp eye and ear out for what is going on around him.
He himself has a grace to his movements, almost never mis-stepping - at least physically. Hraelfmir, to those few who know him, know him to be a scoundrel with a sly sense of humor who seeks advantage, adventure, profit, pretty women to bed, coin that is not his own, and generally the finer things in life to appreciate in full. He's a man who's willing to brave risks to get the things he wants. More recently he has also become a very wealthy man though he's careful with his investments and does not spend lavishly, not without good reason. He has various investments both in ships, merchantile interests in Four Corners as well as investments in the new airships transport services.

Ana : Briefly a member of my crew, Ana claimed she can play the lute, use a cutlass and hand cannon, and grew up on a ship. I met her at Nylan Fortress during the Great Raid by White Hall upon Four Corners. Ana shared her rum while we both sat around wounded awaiting the outcome. Unfortunately for Ana, the Bonnie Lass was later captured by Jarl [[Aethelwulf]] Raskbrook of White Hall and Ana's where abouts went unknown to me. |
|
Caitlyn : Sassy Courtesan I met and took and instant liking to. We played around, shared gossip, romped, got into mischief, and did I mention the romping? I'd wheel and deal and she didn't get paid a thing so she must have seen /something/ entertaining in my company. I shared my booze and my stories with her. |
|
Julieta : Another Courtesan, this one I abducted for amusement on my ship! She was rather cross with me, but I lured her into bedding me! But not without her /demanding/ payment! I made her go fishing for it and still got what I wanted but I lost a nice gold ring set with a ruby. She cost too much. I prefer my women to not be so much trouble. Still I did enjoy the banter with her. |
|
Lady Talia D'Geroux : Sometimes I do odd jobs for the Syndicate - but I'm not so deep in with them that I know who's who behind the curtain. So when Talia came to me with a job proposal, I suspected but didn't know /who/ she was and still don't, not entirely. I've done some checking around and I've keeping an eye out for some things for her but I haven't found what she's looking for. A dangerous woman and a damn fine looking woman. Beware spider's venom. |
|
Eydis Rastbrook : It started with my kidnapping Eydis in Four Corners that led to my ship, the Bonnie Lass, being taken in chase by the Scythe. I was captured in battle by Jarl Aethelwulf Rastbrook himself and I was badly wounded. They took me back to White Hall as a prisoner, my ship taken as prize. I was to become Eydis' 'tame man' but who would tame whom? It didn't take long for me to make myself a deal with the Jarl, a way to escape my imprisonment. |
|
Jarl Aethelwulf Rastbrook : It seemed like a good plan at the time to kidnap Eydis Rastbrook. I fled to the sea from Four Corners pursued by Jarl Aethelwulf and crew on board the Scythe. Once engaged, fierce fighting then ensued and I was taken prisoner. Aethelwulf made a deal with me to lead the White Hall warriors to Partharia, there to make war upon the Southerners using the my armed sloop in a plan of deception. If I would do this, and fight along side the White Hallers, Aethelwulf promised me my freedom. In the end, Aethelwulf was generous in his rewards giving back ship, remaining crew, and a great deal of wealth unto me. And so was coined my byname of 'Halfblood' for I was fathered by some Partharian prince when my mother was a slave. |
|
Ranulfr Rastbrook : Ranulfr and I did our damnedest to kill each other when I was captured by Jarl Aethelwulf at sea, after I had kidnapped Eydis Rastbrook. Ranulfr took /two/ gunshot wounds directly to the chest from my hand cannons and yet somehow the White Haller refused to die! Ranulfr in his turn ran a length of steel through my liver and cut up my right hand. He finally dropped me when too many of the Northerners piled on, taking myself prisoner. Eventually it seemed that Ranulfr and I came to a mutual respect, and possibly even a friendship. Ranulfr later went on to become a Jarl in his own right. |
|
Archduchess Jasmina al'Mordran : A somewhat mysterious, powerful, beautiful woman who offered to repair me ship after the White Hall raid upon Four Corners - if I might accept a business proposition. So I went to Rhone by carriage (I hate horses) to discuss it and came away with an arrangement that I'd sail my damaged ship to Lyionness for the best possible overall. Paid for by the Archduchess. In return, I would run certain … goods for her, quietly. I am pleased to admit there were other perks on the side. Update: It has been a mutually profitable association these past years. Recently she extended the offer that I become her Consort - officially. I accepted. It is now public knowledge that she has a Commoner for a lover. I have grown very fond of her. |
|
Duchess Myrana D'Armaz : A feisty, spunky young woman and not at all what you would expect of a noble. Fiery, opinionated, tiny, and vastly amusing! I met her in the company of 'Dovi' and watching the pair of them bicker and go on is like watching a brother and sister. I'm not sure I believe the stories about how she came by lightsilver, or slaying of the dead. |
|
Viscount Ludovic d'Korbina : We seem to have taken an instant liking to one another. First he shared his drink with me and next he's booking passage on my ships for himself and his people. Thus far I can appreciate his sense of humor. I think we'll get along just fine. Tells good stories too, even if I doubt the truth of them somewhat. Update: While in Hellsmouth I got to see the Viscount's mettle when the Vir Sidus lord, Darius, brought in his legion and threatened to take the Viscount's city by force. I was grateful to see /that/ situation diffused. |
|
Countess Mercedes 'Mercy' d'Juliano : The Admiral of the Aequor navy has offered me a Captain's commission and the use of a four masted Descanda! Along with this proposal I would gain dual citizenship, an officer of Aequor's pay suitable to the rank of Captain, and the possibilities of further reward - not to mention a second letter of Marque to hunt pirates off of Aequor's coastline. A very nice compliment to my Four Corner's obligations and … hopefully no conflict with the Council. We shall see. I appreciate the Admiral being direct and to the point, getting things done. Update: Promoted to Commodore while she exchanged herself for me in random to Lord Tallin. Over my objections. A fiery, very attractive woman whom I bested in the ranged weapons event at her Tournament, but the Countess bested me in turn in the Melee and the Ship Jousting - if only barely! |
|
Privateer Josephine R. Collins : Joined with Josephine, the Pirate Queen in the fight against Kentaire's fleet. My armed sloop, the Bonnie Lass, is no ship of war but she's had her action. We took part in the battle of Red Seas as scout, and I played a key role in the taking of a Kentaire Singulaire. While I didn't get to know Josephine well, she and her ships under her command fought ferociously. She's shorter in person than I would have expected - tiny, with flaming red hair and a surprisingly sweet young face. She was generous enough to those of us who risked our lives to sail and fight along side her. |
